Integration

Integration questions to settle before connecting devices

A checklist for product, engineering and operations teams preparing to receive readings from patients' medical devices.

Why it mattersMost integration surprises come from questions nobody asked early: which fields, which patient, which system, and who answers when a reading is missing.

1. The data you need

  • Which measurements does your program need: blood pressure, pulse, SpO₂, weight, glucose, temperature?
  • Which fields must each reading include: value, unit, time of measurement, device information?
  • Do readings from different devices arrive in the same structure?
  • How are invalid or duplicate readings identified?

2. Patient association

  • How is a hub assigned to a patient in your program?
  • What identifier links a reading to the patient record in your platform?
  • What happens when a hub or device is reassigned or replaced?

3. Delivery to your platform

  • Where should readings be delivered, and how does your system authenticate the sender?
  • What does your platform do when it receives a reading: store it, display it, trigger your own workflow?
  • Which environments do you need for testing before production?

4. Security and data responsibilities

  • Which data and identifiers are exchanged, and which are not?
  • Hosting location, encryption, access control and retention requirements.
  • Who is responsible for what, documented in the deployment scope.

5. Operations and support

  • Who sets up the hub and devices in the home?
  • Who do patients contact, and how do technical issues reach the connectivity provider?
  • How will you know if an expected reading doesn't arrive?

6. Growth

  • How are new device models reviewed and added?
  • Does adding a device type change your integration?
  • How are hubs prepared and shipped as the program grows?
